"Bruin Shelter is a volunteer-run homeless shelter for students experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to (1) provide fellow students experiencing homelessness with a safe and supportive environment, the basic necessities they deserve, the opportunity to invest in their education, and a place to call home, (2) empower shelter volunteers to become social justice leaders, philanthropists, and innovators, and (3) be an open-source model for other universities to create student-run shelters."

What We Do

Brin Shelter strives to provide these individuals with the basic necessities they need through daily meals and shelter, and we also have MSW and medical case management teams to help meet any additional needs and ultimately transition residents into permanent, stable housing. Shelter staff volunteers oversee daily operations at the shelter through overnight shifts (volunteers may sleep from 12 AM - 7 AM), cook meals for residents, and, of course, make all residents feel at home. Bruin Shelter also strives to combat student and general homelessness through external events, partnerships, advocacy, and much more! We have been featured on CBS, PBS Socal, the LA Times, Business Insider, etc., and hope to continue increasing these public conversations surrounding the issue of student homelessness.
